Basics
BMTC ( Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation) travel is convenient when you travel light that is with less luggage e.g. a handbag or just one large bag.
It's safe travel and with good frequency. However try and complete your travel by 9 pm.
Airport buses to and from airport are also run by BMTC. One can carry more luggage in these.
Must Read
- If it's infrequent travel try and carry change which will mean less hassle for you and bus conductors.
- UPI (Google pay, Phone pe etc) can be also used, but this may not be available on all buses.
- Bus Passes - If you are a regular traveler going more than 4 kms on every trip consider buying bus passes. For more details click
- Daily pass (rs.70 for regular non-ac buses)
- Weekly pass
- Monthly pass (Rs.1050 for non-ac buses, Rs. 1500 for non-ac and ac buses)
- Passes (physical hard copy) can be bought at big bus stands, nearest one from varthur-gunjur will be the Kadugodi bus stand.
- Passes can be bought on phone using tummoc app. You need to validate using QR code (stuck on the bus window) when you board a bus.
- Tummoc app monthly passes are valid only till end of the month, though physical ones last 30 days - please check in the app. This might get relaxed.
- Bus stops may or may not have a shelter. Click bus stops to see major ones of concern in Gunjur, Varthur and major change-over stations.
- Depending on your travel time and route you may have to travel standing.
- Non-AC buses reserve front rows (to the left of the middle entrance door) for women. By convention men sit or stand only in second half of the bus.
- Two rows are usually also reserved for senior citizen and one row for handicapped people.
- In AC buses reserved seats are less, however by convention men still occupy seats or stand in second half mostly.
- The return route of a bus doesn't necessarily match the onward route. E.g. 500 CA
- Bus routes can be checked on google maps by giving bus numbers in search box. However this is not correct at times and it's best to ask the conductor regarding destination.
- There are two Whitefield bus stops (one next to Vydehi Hospital and another is whitefield police station/mayura bakery). Be careful when asking someone or the conductor. They are on very different routes.
Other tips
- Add good amount of time buffer if traveling for first time on a route specially to airport. You never know if there will be a traffic jam or waiting time to change bus might be longer.
- Try and not get into argument with fellow travellers or conductors. Speak in a calm way. Your peace of mind is not worth the money or physical hardship.
